Thursday, March 26, 2020 Update

Warriors,

By now you have seen that the Governor has closed the schools in WV until April 20, 2020.  That means that our remote, online learning will continue.  It also means that the prom has been canceled.  I know that it is one of those activities we look forward to, but we must follow the guidelines to stay safe! As I have said before, this is very unsettling because we have no idea of the ending.  Please stay safe!  We need each and every Warrior!!!

The school building is closed but learning is not!  If you haven't logged onto Schoology to start your coursework, now is the time.  Parents/Guardians: If you do not have a Schoology account, please call the school or email your child's counselor.

The buses will bring food for five days on Monday, March 30th.   Thank you to our cooks who have worked tirelessly each day to bring this to you!  Thank you to the bus drivers for the deliveries!!!

Call the school if you need anything.  We are answering the phones between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  All staff is working remotely except for a few people during this time.  Leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Please take care of yourself!!!

Stay safe and healthy!

Tuesday, March 24, 2020 Update

Warriors,

Above all, I hope that you are staying safe and taking care of yourself and your family!  The CDC guidelines can be found on coronavirus.gov.

Remember that things are changing daily so check media and listen for phone calls from the board.

The food distribution was paused again today.  As of now, the buses will run Wednesday with breakfast and lunch for 3 days.  Monday, March 30th, there will be deliveries for 5 days. Be at the closest bus stop for the delivery.

Learning has NOT paused!  Get on schoology and start working if you haven't already!! Complete one assignment at a time.  Make a schedule.  We do not know how long this will last, so get busy.  If you do not understand something, contact your teacher via schoology.

This change in our daily life is unsettling.  Do not watch the media or check social media constantly.  Step away from it for a little while!  And BE KIND to one another!!

Our office hours during this crisis are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Please call the school if you need anything.  You can also use 211 to find resources through the United Way.

Please take care of yourself!!!

Monday, March 23, 2020 Update

Good  afternoon Warriors,

We hope that everyone is using the CDC procedures to stay safe!  We will continue to answer the phone at school from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (until we are told differently).  If you call outside that time, leave your name and number at one of the administrators' extensions.  We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Students: Continue working on your assignments!  Make a schedule and try to stick with it.  Don't do everything at once!  If you have questions regarding your assignments, contact your teacher via Schoology.  Our goal is for you to continue learning!  We are here to help you!

Please take care of yourself!!!

March 19, 2020 Update, Part 2

Warriors,

As you know by now, things are changing often.  So here are our latest changes and updates:
  • The school is closed to the public!
  • Most employees will be working remotely.
  • If you need something from school, call for an appointment.  We want to make sure we comply with the CDC guidelines of less than 10 people together at a time with social distancing.
  • Pickup times in the office will be 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • The phone will be answered Monday-Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. You can leave messages for an administrator.  See below for extensions.
  • You must enter at the main entrance doors and go directly to the main office.
  • Teachers will bring items to the office (instrument, book, etc) if you need something to complete an assignment.
Check out earlier posts for help with Schoology.

Please take care of yourself!!!

March 19, 2020 Update

Warrior Nation,

The administration and staff hope that, first and foremost, you are safe and have all that you need in this trying time.  Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students and our staff.  If you and your family need anything, please know that we are here to help you.

As we continue these unsettling times, I want to make sure that you have the information you need.  However, please understand that the procedures are changing often.  We must be flexible.  We appreciate your patience and trust of our staff to help in this transition period of online learning.

Please follow the advice of the health officials so that all of Warrior Nation stays safe!  The latest advice from the CDC is to avoid gathering in groups of more than 10.  Continue to practice the rule of 6-foot separation when you talk with others.  Wash your hands often!  Cough into your elbow.

Remember:

  • All school activities are canceled until further notice.
  • If you need to pick up an iPad, assignment, etc, you must call the school for an appointment.  If you come to the school, report directly to the main office.
  • The buses are bringing bag lunches and breakfasts by the bus routes each day.  The buses will leave schools around 10:30 am.
  • If a student is in need of an iPad, please call (304) 348-7770 and request to make an appointment with the KCS technology department so that the iPad can be properly deployed at the Board of Education Office on 200 Elizabeth St. Charleston.
  • If a student has an issue with their iPad, they may contact Mr. Longsworth (plongsworth@mail.kana.k12.wv.us)
  • If you need the Internet at home, companies are offering free access through this time.
Our teachers are working to transfer the face-to-face instruction to 100% online.  KCS set the expectation that ALL students are to log onto Schoology to complete assignments and communicate with teachers.  If you need access to or have issues with Schoology contact Mr. Loftis (sloftis@mail.kana.k12.wv.us) or Mrs. Kathy Stout, KCS specialist (kstout@mail.kana.k12.wv.us).

If you are an AP student, continue working as your teacher determines.  You should watch for updates from College Board.

Seniors: Check out the updates on Schoology regarding scholarships.  If you are in a credit recovery class, keep working!  There will be instructions on how tests will occur.

Juniors:  The school-day SAT has been canceled by the WV Department of Education.

Grades-Third nine weeks progress reports are to be accessed on Schoology.  If you cannot access Schoology, email Mr. Loftis.

We want you to make a schedule to work on your assignments each day.  Take time to exercise, take a walk if possible. Above all, take care of yourself and your family!

If you need anything, please contact the school. We are here to help any way we can.

Stay safe and healthy!

March 15, 2020

Warriors,

This is not how we expected to return from Spring Break but this is what we must do!  It is a dynamic situation so things are subject to change.  This is the most up-to-date information that we have.

Schools are closed for students.  This includes Carver Career Center and extra-curricular activities.  Teachers will be placing instructional material on Schoology by Thursday, March 19.  The office will be open from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Parents: If you do not have a Schoology account, please call the school.  A counselor or administrator can get you the information.

Students will use the iPad to access their instruction.

  1. If the iPad is in lost mode, please contact the school asking for Mr. Longsworth or Mr. Corbett.
  2. If students have a check-in/check-out iPad, they can pick it up at school throughout the day from 9-4.
  3. For anyone who does not have an iPad at all due to damage or loss, an iPad will be deployed from the technology office at the Central Office. Students and parents must call first and give the Technology Department (304-348-6116) time to set the iPad up. They will set the iPad up ahead of time so students or parents can just pick them up when they come.
  4. If you have your own device, you can use it as well.
  5.  If you do not have the internet at home there are several options:
    • There are companies that are offering free internet services during this time starting Monday.
    • If you are near a school or public library, you can usually connect to the wifi in the parking lot, near the building.  Connect, download what you need, then complete your work offline.
    • Use hotspot with your phone.
If you have problems with your iPad, contact the school, asking for Mr. Longsworth (IT).

Kanawha County will provide a grab-and-go lunch and breakfast throughout this time.  The buses will leave Riverside around 10:30 a.m. and start their normal run. All you need to do is wait at your child’s bus stop for a meal to be delivered. To get an approximate time for drop off on Monday, you can call the bus garage or the main transportation office for bus times, or it will be 4 hours later than the elementary bus stop times. We are still communicating with the Fayette County leadership to complete the plan.  You can also call the school and we will have the meals waiting for you in the pickup loop in front of the school between 10:30-12:00.
East Bank Bus Garage: 304-949-4714

The Food Pantry distribution scheduled for Saturday, March 21st has been canceled.  However, if you or someone you know needs food items, please call the school.  We will schedule a pickup time and put together a box. We will bring it to the car in front of the school.

Above all, we have to stay healthy! Take everyday preventive actions:
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Of course, all of this is subject to change. As we learn more, we will continue to update you.
Please check Riverside's and KCS's social media pages for any updates.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call or email me.

Again, stay safe and healthy!
#oWn

Sincerely,

Jane Kennedy
