Reminder to complete the Re-Entry 2020 Enrollment form

Greetings Warriors:

I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy. I would like to make sure that you understand the three re-entry options so that you make the best choice for your family.

1.    In-person learning (reporting to Riverside to attend classes) will begin September 8th. The first four days will be an “orientation” week where grade levels and/or smaller student groups will stagger what days they enter the school and have classes. The second and third weeks (September 14th-25th) will be “blended learning” with half the alphabet by the last name going two days, the other half going two days. September 28th, we will go to a full 5 days per week of face to face for students who have chosen the in-person learning option.

2.    E-learning (completely online learning set up on Schoology with Riverside teachers) If you choose this option, you must stick with it for the first semester. There will be required login times with attendance requirements, aligned with the school bell schedule, for students to participate in their courses daily.

3.    KCS Virtual School is a computer-based program, not to be confused with e-Learning. It is self-paced, does not require set log in times. It does not include Riverside teachers, course content or our teacher communication through Schoology. Dr. Valery Harper is the executive director for KCS students enrolled in KCS Virtual school through courses offered by WVDE and its virtual school teachers.

PLEASE complete the KCS enrollment form by Monday, August 10th so we can proceed with finalizing student schedules as soon as possible. You are required to complete all back to school forms before you make your re-entry choice. If you are not able to make that choice online, please contact the school on Monday.

Changes are occurring daily and we are working to ensure your child is safe, healthy, and able to learn in the best possible environment!

Have a wonderful weekend!

KCS Re-Entry 2020 Plan

Greetings Warriors!

KCS has posted its plan for re-entry for the upcoming school year!

https://kcs.kana.k12.wv.us/re-_entry_2020

You, as parents and guardians, are now able to go to the KCS website to make your choice!  There are a lot of details but the simple version is:

  1. Face to face learning in the building.
  2. eLearning with Riverside teachers and utilizing Schoology.
  3. KCS Virtual school.

Take your time and read through the options.  Choose what is best for your family!

Riverside staff has been working to ensure the safety of your children with new procedures of changing classes, entering and exiting the building, and going to get breakfast and lunch.

The NUMBER 1 priority is the health and safety of our students, staff, and community

Remember that we are all going through this together!  As with everything that has happened since March, this may change at any time!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Graduation Ceremony

June 25, 2020, 7:00 PM

Laidley Field

Practice at 5:00 PM

This is a special day for you and your family in which you will celebrate the journey of all your work and perseverance.  Please follow ALL of the health protocols set by KCS and Kanawha Health Department!

https://kcs.kana.k12.wv.us/news/latest_news/kcs_coronavirus_updates

Because of the change involved with COVID-19, the band and chorus will not perform. We are trying to make sure our other traditions are intact to the best of our ability!

Usually, I say, “Dress your best”.  However, we are going to be outdoors and on astroturf.  This could make for a very hot evening.  This is a FORMAL event that you have worked toward for 13 years!  Take it seriously.  LOOK your BEST and be on your BEST behavior!

  • NO jeans!

  • Wear dress clothes under your cap and gown.

  • NO markings on your cap or gown

  • If you wear high heels, they should not be so high that you will have trouble walking in them!  The turf may make you unsteady!

  • You must arrive at 5:00 PM for practice.

  • Parents will be allowed to enter at 6:00 PM

How should I behave?

As mentioned above, these are formal events that are all about you.  We will recognize and honor all of your successes and accomplishments over the past four years.  This is also the time to celebrate one another.  You honor each other by being respectful of each other, the speakers, and the presenters at all events.  Clap when appropriate, cheer when appropriate, and be quiet when appropriate.  Always be RESPECTFUL

BE ON TIME!  BE ON TIME!  BE ON TIME!

What should I bring?

Graduation-Bring your cap and gown!  Bring your Tassel!  No purses, bags, noisemakers, or silly string!

What makes me eligible to participate in the Graduation Commencement Ceremony?

  1. You must have completed ALL 24 credits required to graduate prior to the ceremony!  NO EXCEPTIONS!

  2. You must have taken care of all financial obligations to the school and county.

  3. Turned in (or paid for) your iPad, charging cord, and brick.

Always Be A Student

Keep on learning, Warriors,

Though your high school years are done;

Your whole life’s an education

That has only just begun.

Your diploma is the first big step,

For knowledge is the special key

To winning what you want in life

And being who you want to be.

If you'll always be a student,

You’ll find the secrets to success

And travel on the gold road

To peace and happiness

Senior Planning May 5, 2020

Seniors:
As we begin the month of May, we wind down to the last few activities of your senior year. First, make sure that your assignments are completed by May 15th.  Check your grades on Schoology.  You will not receive a grade lower than the 3rd 9 weeks (QT3) on Schoology.  The 4th 9 weeks assignments are there for you to continue learning and help your grade if you need it.  If you have not answered your counselor's messages, now is the time!  If you are in need of credit recovery, contact your counselor for Summer School.
Secondly, we will have a drive-through time in the loop on May 21 and 22 for you to turn in your iPad, return textbooks, and pick up any graduation items you still need.  We will send more specific information soon. You must return your iPad on or before the aforementioned dates.  If there is a problem, please call the school Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 10 am to 1 pm and talk to an administrator.
Thirdly, we are also getting the slideshow together!  Send a baby picture and a senior picture to rhs20grad@gmail.com. A group of parents is also working for posters with a senior picture on it.  Contact senior parent Shannon Martin for more information.  We want to include ALL seniors in both of these projects!!!

Lastly, we continue to work toward a graduation ceremony on June 25th.  We will be under the guidance of the health officials but our hope is to be together one more time!

From our partners at Riverside Health Center April 14, 2020

Riverside Health Center
1 Warrior Way, Suite 103
Belle, WV 25015
304-949-3591

Healthcare Options:
Due to state-wide school closing to help slow down the COVID-19, the normal method of accessing the clinic while you are at school has been disrupted. We are currently able to offer some medical and/or behavioral health counseling services via telephone or video appointment (i.e., the app “Zoom,” which can be downloaded on any smart device). Please call Riverside Health Center at 304-949-3591 (open 8am-4pm, M-F) for more information on how to access these services. For accurate information on COVID-19, please visit the CDC’s website at https://www.cdc.gov/

Protecting children:
The CDC recommends the following to help protect children from getting sick:
  • Clean hands often using soap and warm water or alcohol-based sanitizer
  • Avoid people who are sick (e.g., coughing and sneezing)
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily (e.g., tables, chairs, doorknobs, light switches, remotes, handles, desks, toilets, sinks)
  • Wash items including washable toys, as appropriate, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, wash items using the warmest appropriate water settings for the items and dry items completely. Dirty laundry from an ill person can be washed with other people’s items
10 Tips for parents and children:
The following recommendations are supported by the CDC to ensure that parents and children remain safe and healthy during the current pandemic (Note: while the term “children” is often used in the recommendations below, these tips also apply to adults).

  1. Limit social interactions: The key to slowing the spread of COVID-19 is to limit contact as much as possible. While school is out, children should not have contact with other children from other homes. If children are playing outside their own home, it is essential that they remain 6 feet from anyone who is not in their own household.
  2. Practice social distancing: Avoid large and small gatherings in private places and public spaces, such as a friend’s house, parks, restaurants, shops, or any other place.
  3.           Clean hands often: Make sure children practice everyday preventative behaviors, such as washing their hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. This is especially important if you have been in a public place. Go to https://www.cdc.gov/ for additional recommendations on how to protect yourself.
    4.      Limit travel plans to essential travel only.
    5.      Stay in touch with your child’s school
    a.       Review assignments from the school and help your child establish a reasonable pace for completing the work
    b.       Let the school know if there are any challenges
    6.      Create a schedule & routine for learning at home
    a.       Encourage healthy sleep habits. See https://www.sleepfoundation.org/ for more information.
    b.       Structure the day for learning, free time, healthy meals and snacks, and physical activity. Examples of a daily schedule for children can be found online.
    c.       Consider ways to make learning fun and engaging (e.g., hands-on activities).
    7.       Check-in with your school on plans to continue meal services during the school closure.
    8.       Watch your child for signs of illness or stress
    a.       Call your child’s healthcare provider if you see signs of illness consistent with COVID-19 symptoms, particularly fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
    b.       Call the behavioral health provider at Riverside Health Center if you have concerns about your child’s mood or behavior.
    9.       Stay active and socially connected
    a.       Encourage your child to play outside. Consider activities your family can do together such as a family walk, bike ride, or dance contest.
    b.       Reach out to friends/family via phone or video-chats.
    c.       Check-in with your child.
    10.   Limit time with older adults, relatives, and people with serious underlying medical conditions due to their increased risk of getting sick from COVID-19.

Stay safe and healthy #Warriors!

Seniors: Look through your grades!!! Get busy! Are you completing your credit recovery assignments?  We want you to have all grades that are required for graduation!!!! Don't lose hope!  We will find out more information regarding the ceremony toward the end of the month.
